Family Farm Creameries grew out of the desire to preserve and keep consumers connected to Western Pennsylvania's rich dairy heritage.
At Family Farm Creameries, we see independent, family-owned dairy farms as an integral part of a healthy regional food system. To put our money where our mouth is, we choose to source only from farms that still do all of their own processing (milk bottling, cheese making) on site.
These operations are an antidote to the modern dairy system that is centered around aggregation and homogenization of bulk quantities of milk. The process of combining milk from hundreds of different farms to be sold under a single brand name has had a myriad of negative impacts that we hope to counteract.
Specifically, this aggregation obscures the connection between producers and consumers as well as the unique characteristics of individual farm's dairy products. This norm has also systemically devalued the intricate process of cultivating nutrient rich grass (and in many cases the use of grass as feed altogether!) that has historically rendered some of the highest quality dairy products around.
Family Farm Creameries is a Pittsburgh-based retailer of cheeses, milk, and specialty dairy products sourced exclusively from independent farmstead creameries of Western Pennsylvania.
